David Gray - Flesh
On Flesh, David Gray's 1994 release, the Welsh singer/songwriter wraps his rough-hewn voice around ten self-penned songs that deal mainly with relationships. Delivered in his earnest voice, the highly literate observations of the lyrics and the folk-tinged feel of the music is easily compared to the work of Mike Scott of Waterboys fame. "What Are You?" kicks things off with an aggressive, bracing vocal growl from Gray over a tumbling rhythm. "Made Up My Mind" features a determined lyric of resilience and moving on. There isn't a weak cut on this record, but the highlights are the sparser, more reflective numbers that highlight the gentleness of Gray's guitar playing and the flawless phrasing of his vocal delivery. "Falling Free" and "Mystery of Love" are two of the best examples with the romantic longing of their lyrics. Neill MacColl adds some wistful slide guitar to the latter. A must listen for any fan of Scott or just anyone who appreciates well-done, acoustic-based rock.

Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert [LIVE]
A musical chameleon, pianist Keith Jarrett was at his finest when he recorded these sustained solo improvisations in a German concert hall in 1975, the first lasting 26 minutes, the second 40. Melodies and rhythmic figures arise fluidly from his fingers as he moves from one idea to another, while his strong left hand is often used for repeated motifs that generate a rolling hypnotic power. This couples with strongly consonant harmonies to impart the flavor of gospel music at times, dance musics and Debussy at others. Above all, it's Jarrett's ability to knit all of his moods and wanderings into an almost seamless tapestry of warm and tuneful ideas that gives this music its enduring appeal.

Violent Femmes - Why Do Birds Sing
This record is probably most famous for its cover of Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?." The acoustic sound they pioneered (way back before MTV Unplugged was even thought of) is still here...for the most part. Many songs seem to be written as a foil to the depressing sound on 3, forsaking cohesiveness and lyrical depth for upbeat ditties. Track two, "Out the Window," is a strong suspect, with shallow lyrics and bouncy music, but does not make sense in the wake of 3. Still, other songs are fun.

Cornelius - Fantasma
From the first cut--"Mic Check," one of the coolest disc openers heard in ages--it's apparant that Fantasma is something special. To hear electronic musician Cornelius (aka Keigo Oyamada) in full effect, skip ahead to "Monkey," which bends blistering shoe-gazing rock with goofy sound effects, lush, surf's up vocals, and a pleasantly modulating 1980s synth with a loud, distorting drum-roll sample. Cornelius's rock-savvy, playful, and idiosyncratic musical collage works as much off the tension between disparate, sampled sounds as their seamless dance alongside each other. Fantasma is firmly in the spirit of the anything-goes, D.I.Y. tradition of both punk rock and early hip-hop.

Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk
Tigermilk is simply gorgeous, an unaffected debut equal to the Smiths' finest work, and seemed to arrive fully formed out of nowhere in May 1996. In songs like the pastoral, shimmering "The State I Am In" and the wonderfully naive "We Rule the School," bandleader Stuart Murdoch had already laid the seeds that would later come to such full, poignant fruition on If You're Feeling Sinister and The Boy with the Arab Strap. The 10 songs here have such a natural pop sensibility, such a grace and resonance, it's hard now to believe that Tigermilk was only originally intended as a small-time project between seven Glaswegian friends (the original vinyl release was limited to 1,000 copies).

Kings of Convenience - Quiet Is The New Loud
Although Kings of Convenience are keen to play down any blatantly self-evident similarities to Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, and Belle and Sebastian, the winsome and placidity-favoring Norwegian duo of Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe have probably already got the subway buskers of tomorrow lining up to lend an ear. Studentlike in appearance (one of them has a duffel coat and John Major specs) and unashamed to softly impart such nonrock lyrics as "put the kettle on" and "using The Guardian as a shield to cover my thighs against the rain," the weightless and airy acoustic guitar muse of Quiet Is the New Loud isn't a million miles from Radiohead's "Nice Dream" or Pink Floyd's "If" with a subliminal swish of bossa-nova rhythm. A contentedly purring cello, a plaintive touch of piano, and the muffled sound of a trumpet add necessary sonic depth, and the results are as pleasant and civilized as a little light conversation over tea in the drawing room.

After years on the shelf due to Mark Kozelek's drawn-out problems with Supreme and Island, the Red House Painters' long-awaited Old Ramon finally sees the light of day, thanks to Sub Pop. As it stands, the label needs Kozelek as much as he needs them — after a few years' worth of disappointing releases from garage rock revivalists, Old Ramon breaks Sub Pop's losing streak.

John Martyn - Solid Air
Much denser than before, Solid Air was to reveal a new twist in Martyn's musical style. Slurring his words even more, songs like the title cut fairly ooze from the shadows, and the jazzy inclinations keep the listener spellbound. A cover of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be the Devil" found Martyn using an Echoplex delay effect, which gave his guitar work an otherworldly feel. "May You Never" is a great folk tale familiar to those who own Eric Clapton's Slowhand — herein lies the original from the writer himself. Excellent!

Seu Jorge - The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions
While The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou movie got mixed reviews, the soundtrack was universally hailed as excellent. The standout was Jorge, who not only had a role as an actor but also played a handful of Bowie songs solo with acoustic guitar, singing them in Portuguese it was a perfect combination of beautiful songs laid bare with a bit of exotic Brazilian spice to add fresh flavor. This collection features the whole of that Bowie session.

Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy
Grant Lee Buffalo shares a common spirit with postmodern wackos the Flaming Lips, but the L.A. trio has a less noisy, more folk-oriented bent. On its Slash Records debut, Fuzzy, the band mixes influences as diverse as the Byrds and the Cowsills, and the Fugs and Leonard Cohen. Guitarist/vocalist Grant Lee Phillips delivers his skewed visions of Americana in a deep, strong voice, while Paul Kimble and drummer Joey Peters provide a shifting melodic and rhythmic background that is always intriguing.

Bonnie Prince Billy & Tortoise - The Brave And The Bold
This first time collaboration between Tortoise and Will Oldham features covers of such artists as Bruce Springsteen ("Thunder Road"), The Minutemen ("It's Expected I'm Gone") Elton John and Bernie Taupin ("Daniel"), Lungfish ("Love Is Love"), Richard Thompson ("Cavalry Cross"), and more. The songs are almost unrecognizable to their original versions, yet each was chosen with care and reverence with no sense of irony. The record is undeniably both a Tortoise and a Bonnie "Prince" Billy record, and yet altogether something completely new and exciting.
