Tom Waits - Franks Wild Years

All the voices in Tom Waits' head come out on this CD: the growler (of course), the crooner, the preacher, the screecher, and the Vegas cheese ball. The instrumentation is equally eclectic. (Yep, that's Waits himself playing the "rooster" on the album's best song, "I'll Be Gone.") More memorable moments: "Innocent When You Dream" (both times), the vocal howling at the end of "Blow Wind Blow," and the lovely coughing fit after "I'll Take New York." Frank's Wild Years is the musical remains of a theatrical collaboration between Waits and Kathleen Brennan, originally staged in 1986. It contains nuggets of important practical advice, sure--"never drive a car when you're dead" (from "Telephone Call from Istanbul")--but mostly these songs are fantasy freaks. Frank's is big-time dreamer. It's a dreamy album. Sweet dreams.

Paul Simon - Graceland

Nick Cave - Henrys Dream

It's been reported that Nick Cave hates Henry's Dream. While it is deeply flawed, especially by Cave's formidable standards, he's being unnecessarily hard on this 1992 collection. Aside from any other considerations, it contains "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry," a rumbling gospel epic that remains a concert highlight, and "Straight to You," an exquisite devotional ballad. It is an odd album, however. Just when its predecessor, The Good Son, seemed to hint that Cave had accepted his natural facility for performing heroically overwrought ballads, Henry's Dream is a partial return to the gloomy Old Testament portents of "Your Funeral My Trial" and "First Born Is Dead." That's no problem--"Christina the Astonishing" and "Brother My Cup Is Empty" are especially fine.

After dazzling all and sundry with their lusciously sublime 1997 debut Moon Safari, Air promptly confused a good portion of those listeners with the dark and dense follow-up, 10,000 Hz. Legend. But it was inevitable; either they returned with Moon Safari Pt. II, which probably would've far outsold 10,000 Hz. Legend but also burdened them with the tag of redundant. Instead, they took the Radiohead route and pleased the critics, a move that'll more than likely benefit their career in the long run.

Beck - Mutations

It's unfortunate how much attention has been paid to how this album was recorded--quickly, without the same level of studio fuss that marked Beck's breakthrough album, Odelay. That's a shame because our favorite chameleon has pulled the neatest trick of all: he's dropped the lyrical schtick that sometimes marred his sonic wizardy, leaving listeners to wonder if he even believed in the music he was playing. That's not an issue here. At times, he sounds like Ray Davies updated for the '90s, stripping himself bare with lovely, simple songs that linger long after they've supposedly ended. Beck may have made his initial mark with "Loser," a clever but insincere admission of inferiority; he's more likely to be remembered for the similar but more heartfelt confession of "Nobody's Fault But My Own."

Since then he's released four studio albums (and one live set, the British import Live Wood); Modern Classics is a democratic collection, choosing three tracks from Paul Weller, four tracks from each of the rest, and adding one new single, "Brand New Start," for good measure. There's not a loser in the lot, but the remarkable thing to note here is the coherence of this collection: Weller's mature rock and love of classic soul has resulted in a sound that's remained remarkably consistent over the course of the 1990s.

Following the Rolling Stones-meets-Black Crowes monstrosity Give Out But Don't Give Up three years ago, Glasgow's Bobby Gillespie and pals are back at the cutting edge with a trippy collection that could rightly be tagged analog electronica. Their Trainspotting soundtrack contribution (included here) melded bluesy harp with contemporary beats and it sets the tone for 11 tracks that use thick swaths of dub, Superfly funk, cheesy electronics, and ambient dance to redefine what was once quaintly known as "head music." Loaded with samples from the cult flick Vanishing Point, the killer "Kowalski" is perhaps the best among a batch of highlights ("Burning Wheel," "Stuka"). All that's missing is a freeform FM station or two to turn it into a classic.

Re-recorded, remixed, overdubbed and repackaged--all before its 1970 American release, mind you--Let It Be has long been the most second-guessed album in the Beatles otherwise sterling catalog. This curious, three-decade-late, stripped-down rethink offers up yet another spin on what started as a back-to-the-roots album/documentary project called Get Back in January, 1969, but ended up as the band's de facto swan song 18 months later. Paul McCartney in particular has long been irked by producer Phil Spector's grandiose orchestra and choir overdubs to the title track and "The Long and Winding Road," and indeed the "bare" versions here have a distinct, plaintive charm lacking in Spector's typical pomp. All the various snippets of studio and live chatter that seasoned the original have been removed, leaving the recordings to be judged on their essentially live-in-the-studio merits.

Terence Rowlands - Curious Curious EP

It starts with a sunrise, it ends with "one star shining," and in between Closing Time contains an honest year's worth (1973, to be exact) of sweet, melodic, vintage Tom Waits--minus some of the vocal growl and thematic grit of his later stuff (but you can see it coming). Waltzes, lullabies, blues, jazz, you name it. Driving songs and drinking songs, even an honest to gosh country tune: "Rosie." There are torchers ("Lonely"), scorchers ("Ice Cream Man"), and back-porch senior citizen love songs ("Martha"): "Those were the days of roses/Poetry and prose, and/Martha, all I had was you and all you had was me." Other standouts are "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" (guess what--he does!) and "Grapefruit Moon," in which Waits croons: "Every time I hear that melody, something breaks inside." On Flesh, David Gray's 1994 release, the Welsh singer/songwriter wraps his rough-hewn voice around ten self-penned songs that deal mainly with relationships. Delivered in his earnest voice, the highly literate observations of the lyrics and the folk-tinged feel of the music is easily compared to the work of Mike Scott of Waterboys fame. "What Are You?" kicks things off with an aggressive, bracing vocal growl from Gray over a tumbling rhythm. "Made Up My Mind" features a determined lyric of resilience and moving on. There isn't a weak cut on this record, but the highlights are the sparser, more reflective numbers that highlight the gentleness of Gray's guitar playing and the flawless phrasing of his vocal delivery. "Falling Free" and "Mystery of Love" are two of the best examples with the romantic longing of their lyrics. Neill MacColl adds some wistful slide guitar to the latter. A must listen for any fan of Scott or just anyone who appreciates well-done, acoustic-based rock.

Although Kings of Convenience are keen to play down any blatantly self-evident similarities to Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, and Belle and Sebastian, the winsome and placidity-favoring Norwegian duo of Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe have probably already got the subway buskers of tomorrow lining up to lend an ear. Studentlike in appearance (one of them has a duffel coat and John Major specs) and unashamed to softly impart such nonrock lyrics as "put the kettle on" and "using The Guardian as a shield to cover my thighs against the rain," the weightless and airy acoustic guitar muse of Quiet Is the New Loud isn't a million miles from Radiohead's "Nice Dream" or Pink Floyd's "If" with a subliminal swish of bossa-nova rhythm. A contentedly purring cello, a plaintive touch of piano, and the muffled sound of a trumpet add necessary sonic depth, and the results are as pleasant and civilized as a little light conversation over tea in the drawing room.

As it stands, the label needs Kozelek as much as he needs them — after a few years' worth of disappointing releases from garage rock revivalists, Old Ramon breaks Sub Pop's losing streak.

John Martyn - Solid Air

Much denser than before, Solid Air was to reveal a new twist in Martyn's musical style. Slurring his words even more, songs like the title cut fairly ooze from the shadows, and the jazzy inclinations keep the listener spellbound. A cover of Skip James' "I'd Rather Be the Devil" found Martyn using an Echoplex delay effect, which gave his guitar work an otherworldly feel. "May You Never" is a great folk tale familiar to those who own Eric Clapton's Slowhand — herein lies the original from the writer himself. Excellent!

Jim O Rourke - Insignifigance

Jim O'Rourke's third solo album for Drag City, reaffirms that he is not only a fine composer, arranger, and producer, but a gifted, creative songwriter as well.He sings on each of Insignificance's tracks, his frail voice providing a sharp contrast to the lush arrangements and sardonic lyrics of songs like the wryly titled opener, "All Downhill From Here," where he observes, "If I seem to you just a little bit remote/You'd feel better if you call me a misanthrope/Or whatever floats your boat/But as for me, I'd rather sink my own." On songs like "Get a Room" and the finale, "Life Goes Off," which, like "Halfway to a Threeway," are twisted yet poignant odes to the strange things we will do for intimacy, Insignificance recalls the sweet sonics and sour sentiments of O'Rourke's work with Smog. Beautifully arranged pop epics like the title track are clearly descended from Eureka's breezy brilliance, but the surprisingly insistent, crunchy rock guitars on the excellent "Therefore I Am" and "Memory Lame" add an extra bite and urgency that O'Rourke's pop-oriented work has lacked previously.
